Welcome to the Men's chat! We're going to focus on the Irish team first, because I think results featuring Irish teams were by far the most unpredictable of the weekend (partially because no one really knew how good XVI would be). It's no surprise to see one of the Irish teams going to Euros, or to see two of them in the top 5. Ranelagh being down in 9th is a real shock though, as were PELT and XVI's paths to the top.
GeorgeJorgensen
I can't help but feel we (PELT) were partially to blame for this silly route by losing to Manchester. I certainly carried a fair amount of English guilt for my part in that loss...
Slender
As context for that Manchester vs PELT game, Manchester had already played PELT at Tour 1 this year in a game that they won fairly convincingly. However, we gave them one or two problems and felt that with their small squad size if we started strong we could give them a good game. At Nationals we did that, managed to play our way and didn't fall into the trap of being intimidated by the fact they've just come back from Worlds.
We managed to keep the game close and never felt out of it. The key moment in the game really came at 14-11. We managed to get a break and then a second due to a sloppy turnover near their end zone making it 14-13. This marked a real momentum shift and gave us the belief that we could complete the comeback and started to make them worried. Another break followed taking us to universe point (by which time a sizeable crowd had gathered to watch). The D line walked back out and got another turn. The game got very tense and tetchy then with several hotly disputed calls going significantly over the 30 second mark but we just about managed to convert to take the game.
hogi
PELT should have closed out that MCR game but hey ho... They seemed to build and hit their stride later in the weekend, which is unusual perhaps as I would have thought them typically fast starters to tournaments and they all know each other well. Weird.
MJB
I don't think the Irish teams are slipping; PELT dropped a game to Manc, Ranelagh to Reading - then finished off by PELT but proceeded to end as high as they could afterwards. XVI had a very good tournament, and going by eyeball may have won Ireland another spot at the North’s expense, maybe?
hogi
I would strongly disagree that the Irish teams are slipping but rather saying that the standard is increasing as all three teams have shown this year at some stage (be it Tour or WUCC) that they are top contenders for EUCF spots every year. While the two losses that XVI shipped were heavy, they knocked off a few teams that have a long history in A Tour, including a team everyone was goading over this year, Ka-Pow!
hazard
See, I find XVI interesting. They won two games (against Ka-Pow! and Manchester, plus a walkover vs Devon) and finished 5th. I would have liked to see how they matched up against some other English teams.

Ste Dawk
XVI’s performances up to EUCR this year have been v lacklustre, to say the least. At Irish regionals this year, XVI lost handily to Ranelagh 1, and a DGP loss to Ranelagh 2, and poor performances against Dublin Gravity and Uproar. We felt it wasn’t disc skills or tactics that held us back, but more team cohesion and match practice. This left us (well, me certainly!) a bit apprehensive going into EUCR.

We’ve a young squad, and our energy is based around not taking ourselves too seriously. We enjoy scoring goals to have weird, stupid celebrations. We like getting D’s to shout and make memes of each other. We’ll make awful, awful jokes on the sideline…and on the pitch. But once that disc is in the air, we’ll work overtime to get our hands on it. Our captain, James O’Donovan (Jambo) was adamant we could go over and take some scalps and get some big W’s under our belts, I was prepared to be in the 13-16 bracket! I’ve never been more glad that Jambo was right while I was wrong.

Slender
Ooh, I didn't think through the fact you mustn't have beaten anyone else apart from us and Ka-Pow!. You had great chemistry, and never got down on each other when a mistakes were made. You were quite reliant on one or two main handlers which is probably why you came unstuck against elite teams. Very good though to say you're a bunch of mates who all went to the same school together (if you weren't aware its XVI because they left sixth form in 2016).

Ste Dawk
When Manchester broke us in the first point, we thought our honeymoon period after Ka-Pow! was over. Then, our O became more confident, our D Line clicked into gear, Ian French and James Doherty throwing dimes to rack up those breaks, and again we took half 8-6/7. Then we closed out the game 13-9, and didn’t know what to do with ourselves.
Alun P
Irish stat for the day: between all three Irish teams, they only had one loss to a non-euro-qualifying team (PELT vs Manc).
hazard
XVI did lose to PELT (13-6) and Clapham (15-5) quite heavily though.
Alun P
15-5 is as close as anyone not called Chevron got to Clapham.
Tristan Millington
As Slender said, they were very good. We struggled to convert our turns against them and they had some great handler movement.
aido19
XVI surprised even me. I knew they would be decent, have a lot of energy and put it to teams but I expected a lot more teething problems in their first tournament abroad. They have a coach that knows how to win games and utilise squads to get the most out of them, so I think that was a big part of it. They will only get better.
GeorgeJorgensen
They were actually up 5-1 to us (PELT). The rain came and our zone started clicking. We also didn't sub anyone on or off so we could keep the momentum and warm hands/wrists on the pitch. In flat weather I reckon they'd have given most teams at Nats a good game.
hazard
Is that hyperbole or did you literally go Iron Man? An interesting tactic either way.
GeorgeJorgensen
I think we made one change late in the game but yeah we went iron man by choice. It was working...

Ste Dawk
Yeah, XVI started off the 4v6 Game-to-Go against PELT very well (with our O line suspiciously holding their first point), before the weather took a nastier turn, we stopped being able to feel our hands, and we couldn’t match PELT’s intensity. They ran out 13-6 winners to qualify for EUCF. We weren’t disappointed not to qualify for EUCF, this season, getting into the game-to-go position was more than enough of a success! Next season will be a different story, though 😉

Against Clapham, our O line got broken in the first point, and we thought that was a good sign, but alas, it didn’t quite work out. Clapham showed their class against us and won 15-5.

hogi
Although I originally said that I would back XVI to beat Ka-Pow! and get to the top 8, I did backtrack and say without Brian Connolly, Jack Mac and others, they may not have the firepower to do so. They have more depth than I appreciated, and having two aul lads in Frenchi and Casey benefitted them too I think. Andrew Cleary seemed to be the go-to man this weekend; even vs Clapham he was beating Phil Garner and OG deep so he's on my radar for Irish selections if he can keep his form up!
MJB
XVI won the right games, just as important as being good.
hazard
This is actually my chance to bring in another point I wanted to discuss. Ka-Pow! ended up in the round robin, despite being the overall tour winners. Potentially due to the fact they played the eventual 4th and 5th seed as their two games. Do we think Ka-Pow! deserved to be there, or did they just lose the wrong games?
Tristan Millington
I personally don't feel like we should have been down there, not that I'm biased...
MJB
I think their initial seed was hilariously high.
hazard
Ka-Pow! finished 2nd at Southern Regionals, without having to play the third seed (Reading) or 4th seed (Brighton), and with a vastly weakened Devon team finishing 6th. No comments about Ka-Pow!'s seed from me, but there's the context. Although it's odd to see that a high seed actually ended up hurting them.
Tristan Millington
The schedule for regionals was weird, no doubting that.
hazard
What happened this weekend then Tristan? Were you missing players? Affected more by the wind than other teams?
Tristan Millington
Nah we were pretty much full strength. We did simply just lose two tight games which dumped us into the bottom four.

Ste Dawk
XVI conceded a break in our first point against Ka-Pow! and there was almost a bit of ‘here we go again…’, but then our O held and held again, and our D line was getting breaks. We got more and more animated, doing stupid, crazy, loud things (see our pommelhorse celebration or our #PowerPose) and took half 8-6. Even then, there was that nagging feeling in the back of my mind of “It’ll be a shame when we muck this up”, but our D Line got another couple breaks, O line stayed solid aside from the odd turn, and we took the game 15-13. When we scored, a Jambo hammer to Costello (one of our coaches), it was met with silence and almost disbelief from ourselves that we won.

Alun P
Ka-Pow! fact: Ka-Pow!'s biggest loss was by two points. Every other team (except Clapham) took a bigger loss at some point in the tournament.
hazard
Ok, if losing to 4th/5th and finishing 13th is harsh, what about losing to 3rd/4th and finishing 9th? Ranelagh were in my eyes one of the strongest teams this weekend, and probably Reading's closest game. As it was, PELT losing to Manchester set up the big Irish match up earlier than anyone predicted.
aido19
I think it was a weird weekend for us. As mentioned the format was determined to find the top four teams in the country, so I’d like to think Ranelagh would have finished higher than 9th in a normal bracket. But, tbh - 5th and 16th are the same thing in in the context of what the tournament means to me as a Ranelagh player.
We started slow in pretty much all our Saturday games. Even Birmingham broke us in the first point of game one, if I remember correctly. Reading game was tough, they were really good at keeping the disc and we really had to work hard to get turns from them. We, on the other hand, gave away possession way too often early on. They also had a fantastic handler mark in the form of Ben Withers who I felt was huge at the front line of their D, while Andy Lewis made some big plays downfield. It also helped them having an 8ft giant on the end of their hucks...
The PELT game was...typical in some respects. Even though no one said it, I think we went into the game overconfident, due to beating them at Tour 1 with similar enough squads.
It was always close and there were a lot of heated moments, but I think PELT deserved their win. It takes a lot of mental strength to win back the disc on universe after you’ve turned. Christy Tinkler got a massive run through D which saved the game for them. I hope they smash Euros.
hogi
It's unfortunate that PELT and Ranelagh had to face each other so early or we could have seen three Irish teams make the top 8 (as I predicted originally).
MJB
Knockout giveth and knockout taketh away. You gave us a very good game and I'm sure you could have given a better account of yourselves than 9th.
hogi
Ranelagh losing to Reading was a surprise to most. I wouldn't have predicted it purely because Ranelagh have played all year as a Men's team and Reading have had a dabble in Mixed, but I'm not surprised to see a strong Reading contingent either way. Gutter for the Laghds to be knocked out and not go to Euros but sugar happens I guess.
hazard
Nationals is in my opinion aimed to find the best four teams. And I think it (just about) managed that. It's just a shame it makes every position below that very chaotic.
MJB
I'll agree with that. It's tough to find a format that'll tick everyone's boxes.
hazard
If I was to schedule one extra game though, it would be Devon vs PELT. It's tough to be knocked out of the top spots by the same team twice, but Devon somehow managed it. If they'd been on the other side of the bracket, I reckon they would've taken XVI. Although given they lost 15-0 in their final game against XVI it's impossible to say.
MJB
Yeah Devon had a pretty unfortunate schedule, plus depleted numbers on the Sunday. I also thought that XVI had conceded their last game as they had no designs on Euros, but the schedule shows the other way around.

Ste Dawk
In the changing room after the game, we (XVI) were soaked to the skin, trying to get dry, get food on board and stop shivering, when the Devon captain arrived, asking if we wanted to play the game. This piqued our interest, but we weren’t sure if the entire team would be up for it, so we had a quick meeting, and were happy enough for the game not to be played and take joint 5th with Devon. Unfortunately, that wasn’t allowed for bids to EUCF (I think we’d gone to UKU committee with the plan of ‘XVI finish 5th, if we do get offered a spot at EUCF, Devon can take it’, but that bid for the West region would get bounced around to all the other regions before coming back to the West, so there was no guarantee on that front that Devon would get to EUCF, if a bid came about). Throughout this discussion, I think, a lot of the Devon team went home, and UKU made the call that if XVI insisted on playing the game, Devon wouldn’t have the players for it, so would have to forfeit.
GeorgeJorgensen
I really wanted to play Devon and I think it would have been a really fun game. The Ranelagh game was strange for me being the only English person on the pitch. I was told Ranelagh comfortably beat PELT at their last meet so we really did come out firing. Man to man they probably had us; it was only our zone again that got us the win. Pádraig Sweeney and Niall McCarthy absolutely bossed this game. I also think Devon would have beaten XVI. Think they were very unfortunate and I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel lucky we (PELT) avoided that.
hazard
Let’s move up slowly through the qualifying teams now. Reading were a lot of people’s wildcard pick for top 4. Despite playing Mixed all year (and relying a lot on the strength of their women), they actually ended up a fairly cohesive unit this weekend. It’s a play which certainly isn’t guaranteed to work - SMOG tried the same and ended up 10th.
MJB
Not really sure how people outside Reading view us as we tend to send very varied teams to tour with a range of finishes, but we think we’re ok. This was the first time we’ve had a close-to-full open team play together since 2014 so it was very exciting.
hazard
What were you expecting/hoping for going into the weekend?
MJB
We were hoping for a Euros spot and we knew we'd have to take an Irish team to get one. Expecting to back door it.
hazard
A point of curiosity - since 2014 a Reading team has qualified for Euros every year (2014 Open, 2015-17 Mixed). How would this open team compare to that last Open team? Has Reading developed, or just had good players the entire time?
GeorgeJorgensen
I'd love to offer an 'outside of Reading' view but my Reading love is well documented. A good club is attracting, developing, retaining and producing some quality players. The fundamentals don't change across gender divisions and they play great Ultimate. No surprise to see Reading qualify as far as I'm concerned.
MJB
💜
We've got a good core of the same players. A few have retired, or moved to different clubs or come to the odd session now and again. And we've been able to cycle a lot more players into the machine since then. I think we'd beat 2014 Reading :3
hazard
I also think Reading may have had one of the toughest routes to Euros I’ve seen. Devon x2, PELT, Ranelagh and Chevron. We literally didn’t play a team that didn’t go to WUCC (and in the actual division we were competing in).
Out of interest, why do people think Reading succeeded and SMOG failed? Only 4 places separated the two teams in all of WUCC (17th vs 21st), but 7 places separated them at UK Nationals (3rd vs 10th).
MJB
Well we didn't really finish that well at WUCC.
hazard
Finishing top of a bracket is always a sign you got an unlucky cross. But maybe this is a sign Reading crumble slightly under pressure from big games (even if what they count as a big game is slightly unusual). It would definitely explain their game against Chevron.
Tom Martin-Hall (one of Chevron’s three captains) gave me this:
We found this weekend tough. We didn’t get challenged until the final, which surprised us considering the quality of opposition (Reading in particular). We then had a tough final in silly conditions, which Clapham managed a lot better than we did. There must have been 30+ turnovers in the final which is ridiculous and a good indication of how hard throwing a forehand was, let alone with top tier defenders chasing you around. Our squad this year has most people returning from last season and has been bolstered by some exciting youth prospects coming through, plus a few other more experienced additions. We’re making progress with every weekend. As a squad, we’re excited for what we can achieve at Euros.
MJB
We didn’t play very well in the Chevron game. But credit to them they kept the boot down and met us half way for that dismantling. The Devon and Ranelagh games beforehand were tough but Chev were really clamping down on our lanes and inhibiting our ability to throw our receivers free. One of those useful games to kick a team up the ass. We're lucky that in this format it was one that didn’t screw us over much.
hazard
It’s tough to say given I tend to play more mixed than open, but Chevron did look stronger to me this year. They haven’t had a properly successful Euros for a while, I’m going to tip them to be back in top 8 this time.
MJB
Also we can kick Rollo out of our trainings so he stops giving away our secrets.
hazard
Or kick him in to join our squad. Either works.
MJB
lolo
hogi
Having watched the Chev-Reading game, a lot of the Reading errors looked tired. The Chev lads used their athleticism to either shut down the unders or at least make every catch uncomfortable and as Matt said, they clogged the lanes well. I wanted to see Reading do well so was disappointed by their performance in this game as I thought they could give Chev a bash.
MJB
Maybe next time.
GeorgeJorgensen
Chev just flexed on Reading. For the most part they are bigger, faster, stronger. Think on another day Reading might have done better but Chevron looked very confident out there.
hogi
I'd agree that Chev are stronger this year; they have a lot more depth and you can see that a lot of younger lads who have played smaller roles in previous years are playing bigger roles now or at least are playing better in their usual roles. Dec Cartwright is someone who stands out as a much improved and much more involved player this year, if you pushed me to name someone, which you did not. Agreed that Chevy look like something out of a Daft Punk song.
hazard
I literally don’t think there’s any reason talking about any other Chevy game (or actually any other Clapham game) other than the final, so let’s use this to pivot onto the final team we need to discuss. Clapham win again. Shock reacts only please.
hogi
😱
Bias aside, Clapham were significantly more comfortable on disc in the wind and sideways rain. Yeah, there were a ton of points that were turnover heavy but going upwind, Clapham could still break the mark, swing the disc, and occasionally boost it in a more composed fashion than Chev.
Credit to both teams, the defence was tight AF for the most part so there were as many forced turns as wet hands drops perhaps.
hazard
AF = as frick, for any children reading.
hogi
yes 😇
Throw of the game goes to Ben Burak though for a simply delish huck to Rollo. Full length OI jobby that could well have been taken by the wind and sent into orbit but it was perfect.
Pity it was called back on a pick...
hazard
If it goes long to Rollo Sax-Dixon, can’t you just assume it’s his by that point? It feels like the most spirited outcome.
hogi
I don't think that reasoning would be 100% looking at the final tbf. Few Ds going to Rollo.
GeorgeJorgensen
Was always going to be a pick or a travel. People tend to call stuff when they've been embarrassed...
hazard
It’s quite interesting that at both Regionals and Nationals we’ve talked about Clapham’s comfort on disc in bad weather being a deciding factor though. I think at Regionals you said non-Clapham teams were scared to play short discs. Was that the case here as well?
hogi
Hmm... good question. I think I'd have to watch it back again. Perhaps it was more of a cutting thing this time around but Clapham seemed to have better breakside flow and more swing options than Chev? As Tommo said though, it was bloody tough to throw into that wind, even without the rain making hands and discs wet.
hazard
Alright. How do we think PELT, Reading, Chevy and Clapham will do at Euros? Any moving between them (like PELT finishing above Chev last cycle?).
hogi
Hard to say without seeing groups and that.
I would have liked to see the Reading-PELT game at the weekend to answer that question better.
hazard
Clapham to win again from my eyes - I think post-WUCC CUSB/Bad Skid won't be as strong. I’ve already called Chevy top 8. I think, given previous years, PELT and Reading could both make top half, and would be disappointed with bottom 8. Reading to pip PELT.
hogi
I think post-WUCC CUSB will be weaker than WUCC CUSB sure, but they've good depth and they match up very well with Clapham's O-line which has been the undoing of Clapham thrice this year. Will be interesting to see if that match-up happens.
Bad Skid have no reason to be weaker because they didn't have any pick-ups at WUCC, right? But I still think the WUCC pre-quarter was where they played the game of their lives, and wouldn't beat Clapham if we did it all again later than tourney.
To compliment that, Clapham looked better this weekend than at WUCC I think.
GeorgeJorgensen
Frick it, I'll say it: PELT underestimated Reading and overestimated their (our) zone against them. Sure, no one went into the game caring that much after hours in a changing room but I kept saying what a bad idea zone was against them and we kept going with it. At Euros I want the rematch, toe to toe, man to man and with everyone wanting to win. Last weekend just felt like a friendly.
MJB
Hey man we're all just friendly bois.
hogi
So Clapham to win the whole thing again could be a fair shout.
GeorgeJorgensen
I want to see Clapham win the whole thing. It’s boring seeing them win Nationals. It’s a shame a lot of top players leave their clubs to go to Clapham. But when it comes to Euros we all want to see them smash it.
MJB
Yeah Clapham for the win; and after getting lit up by Chev it'd be nice to see them do well too.
hogi
As mental as that sounds, their Windmill results would suggest they can tussle with the top teams in Europe.
hazard
Do we think the West region deserves an extra spot? Or is four about right?
hogi
I don't think there are many teams outside the Top 4 who would make waves at Euros, other than Ranelagh. So 4 seems fair at the moment, unless XVI, Devon, EMO and Brighton all decline a fifth bid and Ranelagh get to go.
GeorgeJorgensen
I'd say Devon would do well at Euros.
hogi
Define well...
MJB
Top 24.
hogi
No discredit to Devon because they're building and maintaining a good program but I think Ranelagh would do better at Euros / vs European competition than Devon.
GeorgeJorgensen
Yeah I agree. But in terms of wave making ability mention earlier, Devon are probably there for me.
hazard
Pick an all-star line of seven players (try not to make them all Clapham) based on who you thought performed well this weekend.
MJB
I'll pick my boy Ben Withers with the thicc-est 45 degree front arc.
GeorgeJorgensen
He can't make the all star line with his shorts.
hazard
We’ll do top seven guys who look best in shorts after this if we have to. For now, playing ability.
hogi
All-star 7, from the limited amount I saw, which immediately makes this less relevant:
Handling - Josh Kyme, Joe Wynder, Podge Sweeney
Cutting - Conrad Wilson (had to pick at least one housemate...), Andrew Cleary, Justin Foord (my boring pick), Tall Jamie
Credit where it's due, Conrad was actually very, very good in the two games I saw him play and it's not just a housemate vote. Apologies to other housemate, Will Rowledge, who will naturally be devastated by my vote for Con.
hazard
For me, I watched the Women’s final, so literally saw zero of Clapham this weekend. As such, I’d agree with a lot of those picks, although I think Andy Mitchell played in a way I haven’t seen for a good couple years - a real positive sign for Reading if he’s getting back to peak. I also liked Mark Fanning from PELT, and the really young looking handler from Ranelagh.
hogi
Matthew Feely of Ranelagh? #79 I think. He's the club coach at the mo and assistant coach to the Irish Men's team for EUC 2019. He's very good.
hazard
Yeah, I believe it was #79. Regardless, Matt, you’re in my list.
hogi
Yah, I considered Feely alright, but considering final positions, PELT wouldn't have been 4th without Podge. Actually - I'll take Justin out of my Top 7 and stick in Andy Hillman; his D in the final was insane. His footwork is immense and he had a couple of choice around forehand assists vs XVI too.
GeorgeJorgensen
We really wouldn't have been there without him. And that's coming from one of the most arrogant handlers in UK ultimate.
aido19
For my 7, I saw a limited amount of other games in the division - but I suppose it would be (limiting myself to one per team*): Padraig Sweeney (PELT), Joe Wydner (Chev), Mark Bignal (Reading), Conrad Wilson (CU), Liam Fletcher (‘Lagh), James O’Donovan (XVI), Giant Reading Man* aka Tall Jamie
*Couldn’t not pick him so two from Reading it is...
GeorgeJorgensen
I don't know Ultimate player's names. Just whether I hate them not. I'll abstain from picking an all star line.
hazard
George, feel free to pick a top 7 3 of players you actually like then.
GeorgeJorgensen
I can do 3:
Alex Charlton
Pádraig Sweeney
Marius Hutchinson
hazard
My final comment - third place should get bronze medals. My Division 3 University Open Outdoors (aka 31st in Open Uni) medal still sits proudly on my wall. It’d be nice to have a “third best club team in the country” medal beside it (and give non-Clapham players a chance at something). (Retroactive note: BUCS fund uni medals and this would have to come out of UKU’s pocket).
hogi
Yeah, would see that at fair and typical for other sports.
hazard
Might make a few more teams stay around and watch the final too, if they have to wait to get stuff.
hogi
To be fair... I can see why people bail as early as possible if the last final games don't finish ‘til 6.
hazard
Oh yeah, I can too. Particularly those with a long drive home.
GeorgeJorgensen
A bronze medal wouldn't make me any more likely to stick around.
... Even if it was mine.
hazard
UKU, time for another survey.
GeorgeJorgensen
Please no.
