The Recap: Open National League (update 2)

Editor: Hazard (he/him)

We're still looking for people from EMO and Chevron to write paragraphs for us, let us know if you'd like to help out!

The Open National League is getting into full swing now, with some important games taking place. Most crucially, given that the top three spots get automatic qualification to the National Championships, Alba beat Devon to all-but-seal the 3rd spot overall. Clapham and Chevron look fairly set to join them, but faced off this weekend too. Ka-Pow! and EMO round off the League, with EMO playing their first games of the season.

Structure

The overall championship is the UK National Series. Within it, teams compete for 8 spots at the National Championships. An easy to read graphic is included below.

We have 6 National League teams (Alba, Chevron Action Flash, Clapham, Devon 1, EMO, Ka-Pow!). They will play in a mini-league for 3 spots at the National Championships.

We also have the National Cup, we have 9 teams remaining out of 26. Up for grabs are 2 spots at the National Championships, which go to the finalists of the cup.

The remaining 3 National League teams, the two Cup semi-finalists, and one intrepid qualify-the-hard-way Cup quarter finalist will enter the National Playoffs, seeking to be among the final 3 spots at the National Championships.

National League

Devon  15 - 3  EMO

Location: Northwich

Half-Time Score: 8-2

Matt Bolton (Devon): Wet day. EMO looking much depleted with a couple of experienced handlers and that one non-southern GB Open player (editor's note: Joel Miller). Our defence took control pretty quickly, running around a lot and stifling flow. EMO put some hucks and hammers up to get on the board and we closed out the game with some zone.

Alba  15 - 9  Devon

Location: Northwich

Half-Time Score: 8-7

Matt Bolton (Devon): Next up the Scottish horde in a slight throwers wind. Dev started off on the back foot going 0-2 down before getting hyped up and pushing to 5-3. Alba rallied to get the breaks back and traded up for half. Out of half Alba brought the defensive adjustments - clogging our lanes on static discs and pushing handlers who could deal with it upfield. They ran us hard as they had the numbers then we let the personal errors creep in and Alba carried the game away. Great match, very loud, would do it again.

Andrew Warnock (Alba, he/him): lol.

Alba  15 - 5  EMO

Location: Northwich

Andrew Warnock (Alba, he/him)An interesting game as both teams just coming off playing Devon. Alba always going in as favourites having just smashed Devon, and were expecting EMO to roll over pretty easily. I think they had definitely learned a bit from the first game though because the EMO offence actually flowed very well, and the turns either came from execution errors, or just big blocks from the alba side.

The game unfortunately had a big injury when Jake Burgess of Alba deciding to go for a hero bid, but ending up dislocating a shoulder and taking an early trip home back to Scotland. Best of luck with the recovery Jake xx.

The alba boys then just stayed clinical for the rest of the match and saw the game out well. Shoutout to Ross Nugent for his cocky half time speech saying something along the lines of "when im on it, f***ing nobody can keep up with me". He then threw away with a forehand next point. Great craic all round. Also big up Rob from EMO for booking the pitch.

Clapham  15 - 8  Chevron

Location: Oxford

Connor McHale (Clapham): CU were missing a few of their main stays, but still brought a squad of 21. Chev had a lot of new faces I hadn't seen before on the D line.

CU broke early to get a 2 goal lead trading up. O line were scoring comfortably and D line were generating turns most points. Half happened at around 8-5(?..)

Chev came out of half on D with a zone look and it certainly slowed the CU O line down a little. CU were forced to make more completed passes in the 1st point out of half than the entire 1st half put together, but still managed to hold for the point. The Clapham D line did a great job of taking away most deep shots - any that did go up had 2 CU bodies underneath. In the end a comfortable run out from the O line and a solid performance from the D line.
